Using information technologies in product-choosing process and computer aided designing and are of the trend in manufacturing industry.In the traditional product-choosing process for reducers, product samples are usually used as the key references. Firstly, users have to work out the different parameters like power, rev and torque according to their working conditions, and then they will search manually among the samples till they go the appropriate reducer. This method is neither efficient nor of high quality. In the meantime, making paper samples is really time-consuming. Meanwhile, due to its late updating and simple format, it can not reflect the timely information of the products to the customers through this way. Hence it's hard to propagandize the enterprise image to the customers as expected.Based on the ERP project of some reducer factory in Jing-zhou, this paper had a research on the techniques and methods related to the choosing and design of a product together with a study on the trend at home and abroad, then it developed a Web-based product-choosing system which is easy to use and fully interactive. Some key technologies and designing theories involved in the developing process of the system like CAD, knowledge base system, product presentation, database technology were deeply discussed.In the product-choosing system, users can input or choose some parameters according to the specific requirements, and then the system automatically generates the other relevant parameters, searches out those products that meet the requirements from the product list and provides the two or three dimensional pictures of the products, this really enhances the efficiency and accuracy. If there is no products that directly meet the requirements, the parameters given by the customers could also be used for quick designs together with knowledge warehouse system .This undoubtedly improves the designing efficiency of the products.
