It is significantly risky in the plastic surgery since both function and appearance must be considered carefully. So the essential importance to the success of the plastic surgery is observing the structure, detecting and measuring the aberrance and simulating the whole operation. With the computer technology, the Computer Aided Plastic Surgery will truly and recursively simulate the whole process of the operation to improve the accuracy and decrease the cost.This research work is supported by National Natural Science Foundation of china. The thesis presents the basic methods and the key processes of plastic surgery by using the computer visualization technology. It is specialized in the facial surgery. It mainly includes:1) Digital model reconstructing methods. Based on the self-organizing feature map neural network, a new method is presented to segment the various tissues in the medical image after it has been preprocessed. Then the volumetric data is reconstructed by Marching Cubes algorithm. Meanwhile, the texture and mesh data are obtained by the 3d range capture.2) Feature point detection and feature measure methods. Based on the light shooting algorithm, the feature points are being detected after they are being defined. Then the feature measure method is implemented when the volumetric data and mesh data are registration in the same coordinate system.3) 3D mesh editing methods. With the mesh subdivision and mesh decimation algorithms, presenting the new mesh edit algorithm which based on calculating the average value of cell's vertexes, so the mesh can be edited in multi-resolution. Furthermore, using mesh smooth, mesh normalization and texture mapping to improve the rendering quality.4) System design and implementation. We have built a computer-aided plastic surgery planning system, FaceLift, by Visual C++ 6.0 and VTK open source 3d graphics library for the virtual operation. The correctness and high efficiency of the algorithms in this thesis are proven by the system.
