As one of the most important utilities of modern distance teaching, the real-time interactive multimedia teaching system over IP Network becomes more and more attractive due to its distinguished merits such as famous teacher's lecture sharing, multimedia interaction and so on. Most existing teaching systems over IP network are based on Wintel, they are either limited to a local network, or dependent on very expensive hardwares. Thus, it is so imperative to develop a full functional real-time teaching system based on Indigenous software and hardware over wide area network.In this thesis, a large-scale real-time multimedia teaching and interaction system is modeled. By analyzing the functionalities, network model and architecture of the system, three key issues are discussed and solved, including adaptive encoding/decoding technology, real-time transmission technology and multi-stream synchronization technology. Compared with other relative products, the system shows some merits, such as low cost, flexibility, reliability etc. It can meet the basic requirements of real-time teaching. The system has already been applied in 12 schools, such as accessorial high school of Chinese People's University, accessorial high school of Xi'an Jiaotong University, the fiftieth high school of Urumchi and so on. The system has a brilliant future of application and has far-reaching significance for reducing development cost, accelerating popularization of national software and hardware, resolving teaching problems of remote districts, etc.
