The Analysis Of The Layout Of Xinhua Daily: A Relevance Approach

D. Sperber & D. Wilson have proposed Relevance theory (RT) with the aim to unify theory of cognitive science and together with an attempt to shift the whole center of pragmatic theory to a general theory of cognition. Scholars at home and abroad have made a lot of research on RT and applied it to different fields to help explain and solve problems. The present thesis is trying to apply RT to non-linguistic communication-to interpret the layout of Xinhua Daily. According to RT, all social communications should comply with RT, including reading newspaper, for in the course of news reading, readers are actually communicating with the editor and accepting the information conveyed by the editor through its layout. The thesis summarizes the research outcomes in recent years first, and then introduces essential concepts and principles of RT, followed by the proper analysis and explanation of the layout of Page A in Xinhua Daily, thus enlarges the application scope of RT.
