Wireless Local-Area Network, or WLAN, is a combination of computernetwork and wireless telecommunication technology. Since WLAN useshigh-frequency radio waves rather than wires as the transmission media,it performs as a supplement and extension of wire-connected LANs. WLANis not only broad-band, but also easy to deploy, extend and maintain. Todayan 802.11g WLAN can transmit data at a speed of up to 54Mbps while offersthe possibility of mobileaccess, therefore provides a fast and convenientsolution for situations where wire-connected LANs are found difficult tohandle. Considering WLAN as an enhancement of GPRS and precursor of 3Gcommunication, China Mobile shows a strong interest in this technology. The paper researches the function principle and the referencearchitecture of the 802.11 wireless LAN. Specially makes a detailedresearch to the MAC layer of IEEE 802.11 b protocols. And discusses howto make use of the access point equipment to draw a practical implementalplan of the Wireless LAN and process Network Optimization.Wireless LAN has many advantages, such as good mobility,long-distance transmission, low-cost development and operation, easyexpansion, flexible networking approach and facilely management. Theproject makes use of the advantages to assemble the coverage-widely,extensible, and manageable wireless LAN in the area which wired LAN extenddifficultly, so make up for the deficiencies of traditional wired LAN.And, on this basis, conducts a detailed study of network optimization.
