With the rapid development of modern information technology, barcode has gradually become an effective way of information representation in the process of merchandise currency and storage. By lessening the work of manual input, it improves the speed of merchandise storage and indexes and advances the efficiency in this process. However, 1D barcode may face great limitations when the practical application calls for more volume of information storage. The emergence of 2D barcode has solved the problem of merchandise description which has puzzled us for a long time and made the barcode become the effective tool in information storage and recognition. Besides possessing the basic features of 1D barcode, 2D barcode also holds the features of big volume of information, high reliability, strong ablity of error correction and representation of images and characters.2D barcode contains information in both horizontal and vertical directions. As the new technology of information storage, transmission and recognition, it has attracted the attention of many countries from the day of its naissance. USA, Japan and Germany are dedicating their efforts in the development of new technology and establishment of standard related to 2D barcode while finding more industries for its application. They hope to develop the barcode which may contain more information to satisfy further need.This thesis bases on the ideas above and adds a new dimension--color into 2D barcode to design the colorized 2D barcode. By analyzing the process of production of Data Matrix, the thesis finds the step that can be used for information expansion and inducts the color information into it. The method increases the volume of information without changing the planar space the barcode may take. The thesis compares the traditional 2D barcode and new colorized one by using actual examples of barcode production and we can see the advantages of the latter one in the volume of information storage and the size of barcode. Meanwhile, the thesis also analyzes and demonstrates the expansibility of the design method in all kinds of barcodes with matrix form. By giving an application example of colorized barcode in image encryption, we can forecast that in come-at-able future, with the further developmet of recognition equipment and technology, the colorized 2D barcode would have a brighter prospect in the areas of military affairs, information, transportation and so on.
