Nowadays, the global wireless telecommunications trends mobile, broadband, and IP. Under the background, the mobile telecommunication industry brings forward a new marketing demand of ameliorating and enhancing 3GPP technologies, more powerful services abilities, and better users' experiences. Therefore, 3GPP starts on 3GPP Long Term Evolution to maintain competitiveness and the leading position in the area of mobile telecommunications. And it needs to study the wireless interface and wireless network architecture further.RLC and MAC layer are two important wireless interface protocols in 3G system. One of their crucial functions is to make up the error recovery due to the deteriorative channel transmission conditions, provide better links condition to the transmission control protocol of upper layer. Then, the study of RLC and MAC two layers retransmission mechanism is very important to whole wireless system. In this thesis, it firstly introduces the targets, requirements, and changes of related framework of 3GPP LTE. Secondly, it describes the structures, functions, and retransmission mechanisms in RLC and MAC layers in detail; analyze the effect to the system performance synthetically. Finally, I simulate the two layers retransmission mechanism; analyze the effect of related parameters on the dada packets' mean transmission delays and throughput. The conclusion is that the two layers retransmission mechanism can decrease transmission delays, and improve system's throughput, and provide more reliable data.
