IEEE 802.16 standard, which is regarded as the best solution of wireless last-mile broadband access in Metropolitan Area Network (MAN), was designed with the goal of offering higher speed/capacity, lower cost, and better scalability than traditional technologies. As the key technology of next generation wireless communication, IEEE 802.16 standard attracts more attentions. With the development of Mesh Mode, some new problems should be resolved promptly, such as routing constructing algorithm, space and frequency reuse, and resource allocation mechanism. This thesis briefly introduces the main content of IEEE 802.16 standard, and the basic concepts of wireless mesh networks. We emphasize the advantages of IEEE 802.16 Mesh Mode and focus on routing constructing algorithm and scheduling problems. Based on the detailed analysis, we propose our solution: 1. a collision-avoid routing constructing algorithm for IEEE 802.16 Mesh Mode; 2. a centralized scheduling algorithm to exploit throughput. Simulation results show that the overall throughput is greatly improved when using our proposed algorithm.
