With the rapid development of the computer technology, communication and Internet technology, network security and information encryption have become more and more important. Image includes more information than voice and text, so the information security of digital image has already become an international hot subject.With the improvements of computer performances and decryption methods, the studies of new encryption technologies are imperative and important. The randomness, noise-like and extreme sensitivity to initial conditions in chaotic system are important characteristics for cryptosystem. The use of chaotic systems in secure communications has gained much attention throughout the last years.In this paper, a lot of work on application of chaos theory to image encryption has been carried out:Firstly, the development and application of chaos theory in image encryption are introduced.Secondly, several representative encryption algorithms based on chaos theory are introduced.Lastly, a new image encryption algorithm based on discrete chaotic system and continuous chaotic system is presented. Experimental results show that this algorithm has larger key space and the algorithm is easy to implement and the encrypted image is sensitive to the key.
