The Video Coding Experts Group (VCEG) in ITU-T and the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) in ISO/IEC jointly formally brought forward a new international video compression coding standard on March 2003. The new standard was known as ITU-T Recommendation H.264 and as ISO/IEC MPEG-4 part 10 or Advanced Video Codec (AVC). The main purpose of this standard is to provide a broad range of multimedia applications with higher reliability and efficient coding performance when transporting regular video through various networks compares to former video compression standards. H.264 has gotten much attention from research field and industry all through, and the high-complexity of H.264 algorithm has always been a factor of restriction of application, so the study of the implement and optimization of H.264 encoder based on DSP is significant.This paper illustrates the design of H.264 capturing, coding and display system based on TI DSP (TMS320DM642). Hardware constitution and software realization of the real-time video encoder are particularly introduced. The paper especially discusses all kinds of techniques to optimize the H.264 program according to the hardware construction and compiling characteristics of DM642. The video coding techniques and international standards are introduced firstly, and then the new coding features adopted by H.264 are discussed in detail. Secondly, the paper introduces the architecture of hardware platform and gives some discussion on key chips on board. The development environment of DSP program is introduced also, including Code Composer Studio (CCS) and extended Development System (XDS). Thirdly, the paper discusses the design of video encoder hardware interface driver, including DSP processor, memory architecture, video input interface and output interface. And the paper presents the detail of software design and the optimization on video encoder, especially on some key functions. Then the paper gives the test results of the video capturing and encoding system. And the results indicate that we can implement H.264 encoding system on TMS320DM642 chip with a good performance.
