Infrared technology, a new tool to be used to research and explore nature, have been catholically applied to biology, medicine, geoscience, militaries scouting in many countries. But infrared thermal image have less definition than visible light image and people usually hope to observe information including infrared and visible light synchronously. Image fusion, an important technique in computer science field and image information field, provides an effectual means of realizing it. The paper's research object is a infrared image and a visible- light image. And a fusion method which is more valid and convenient is selected, based on the compare of various fusion techniaues. By means of the method, a system of image fusion is designed which is based on Visual c++.The first, the research background, basic concept, fusion hierarchy, applying, the current internal and international researching of the image fusion are depicted in this paper. A method employed in evaluating the performances and the effects of image fusion methods is elaborated. And several image fusion methods in airspace are presented, which are testified unsatisfied in the image fusion of infrared image and visible light image.Because of the good performance of wavelet transform employed in information analyzing and processing fields, it is employed to research the image fusion of infrared image and visible light image. In the next chapter of the paper, we mainly introduce the wavelet transform and its program designing. After depicting the principle of the wavelet transform and the wavelet multi-resolution analysis, we particularly present the Mallat algorithm and the lifting algorithm of it. At last of the chapter a program of the wavelet transform is designed which is based on the Mallat algorithm and the lifting algorithm.In the forth chapter of the paper, the image multi-resolution analysis of Laplace pyramid and the image fusion basis on the wavelet transform are introduced. Then we testify the image fusions' effect of the wavelet transform and compare all various methods of image fusion. At last we select two methods from them as basic methods of a image fusion system and design it, which are the maximum selection rule of wavelet coefficient and the maximum selection rule of wavelet coefficient neighborhood energy.There are two innovations in the paper.1) Systematically analyzed and compared all image fusion methods of the infrared image and the visible light image, and selected two methods more effective and more practical.2) Designed an image fusion system which was basis on wavelet transform and can fast calculate and have good transplantation...
