Because Photonic Crystal Fiber (PCF) has so many strange characteristics that the traditional optical fibers do not have, so it has attracted the academe and the industrial field widespread attention. The researches about PCF have made very great progresses in current decade. This article analyzed and researched chromatic dispersion, confinement loss, effective model field area as well as the birefringence and so on some characteristics of the PCF mainly, the key point was using multipole method to analog and computation some basic characteristic-parameters of PCF, and myself independently designs several kinds of structures to perform to discuss.Firstly, in the introduction this article introduces the development and some historical background of the PCF, discovering of the photon crystal and the research application as well as the classification and the manufacture methods of the PCF.Secondly, through fundamental researching about the PCF, this article introduced the characteristics emphatically, which include chromatic dispersion and loss and so on of the PCF, it has introduced and contrasted several methods, which can analog and commutate the model field characteristics of the PCF. This chapter highlighted the characteristics and the superiorities of the multipole method and choused multipole method as main method, introduced the multipole method principle and the equation as well as the suitable conditions. Finally, We used multipole method to analog and commutate the chromatic dispersion and confinement loss and effective model field area of the PCF that has big model field area, which was designed independently by my self and the results of the computation have been carried on to analyze.Finally, this paper introduced double refraction nature of PCF, the emphases was the characteristics and application of a kind of special PCF- high double refraction PCF, and using multipole method to simulate and compute the model field characteristics of one kind of high double refraction PCF, then obtained model field vector distribution map, the chromatic dispersion and the loss characteristic of this kind of PCF, and analyzed and researched the results.
