In recent years, biometric identification technology (BIT) has been a research focus in the area of science. Nowadays, automatic fingerprint identification technique (AFIT) has become the most popular BIT in the world. Many researchers have done much work on fingerprint identification and developed many novel algorithm. But the researches meet many problems because of the absence of universal research platform on fingerprint identification algorithm (RPFIA). It's a very important work to design and develop a RPFIA.It is noted that, through the whole project design cycle including system requirement analyses, platform design and programming, Rational Unified Process or RUP is used as development tool to analyze and configure software development process; The Unified Modeling Language or UML is used as standard language for specifying, visualizing, constructing, and documenting the artifacts of software systems. Using the platform, we develop some algorithms, especially a hybrid method of fingerprint image segmentation and a fingerprint image segmentation method based on label box, for fingerprint identification.Paper mainly as follows:At first, after describing the AFIT and the content of AFIT research, we introduce the background of RPFIA and analyze the status of research in the world.Second, we depict system requirement analyses process of RPFIA. We describe the analyses on whole system, especially the functional requirement and nonfunctional requirement.Third, after introducing the correlative technique briefly, we depict the unitary framework of RPFIA and the pivotal part, especially the design of database and use case. And we describe the situation of programming and testing.Finally, we depict some research based on RPFIA, especially a hybrid method of fingerprint image segmentation and a fingerprint image segmentation method based on label box. We describe the applications in different phases on algorithm research.The design and development of RPFIA improve the efficiency and quality of fingerprint identification algorithm research. The achievements based on RPFIA prove the point. It will be more important as having more modules and improving on functions.
