This paper chiefly introduce the accurate design principles of metal cutting tools and some basic theories of chip-hold grooves, and using ANN accurately simulate cutting tools' profiles and the spiral grooves. Metal cutting is a process of great majority, using wide and basis in modern machine industry, but the accurate design of cutting tools' profile and chip-hold groove is a base of cutting tools' design, it has crucial effect in cutting capability and the quality of processed workpieces. Accurate design and right using of cutting tools can great enhance products' precision and productivity, and reduce manufacturing cost.The artificial neural network is a kind of new type modeling tool of simulation the structure of the human nervous system, a large amount of dealing units make up the nonlinear mapped dynamic system, so that it possesses large-scale parallel disposal capability, good organizes, adaptability by oneself and very strong association, study, fault-tolerant and anti-interference ability, all of these characteristics are necessary to multiform modeling in mechanical engineering field. Especially ANN was used in machine design and manufacturing projects and machine equipments, so as to machine design and manufacture have farther development in a new theory domain.This article using artificial neural network's nonlinear mapped characteristic with the Levenberg-Marquardt back-propagation algorithm to fit discrete coordinates of cutting tools' profile so that obtain the purpose of high precision to design cutting tools' profile. Moreover, a nonlinear model, which is established between the spiral groove and the milling cutter profile by BP neural networks, according to the spiral groove to simulate the milling cutter profile and according to cutting tools' profile to simulate the spiral groove. With the neural networks' toolbox of MATLAB to experimentize, the experimental result has proved that adopt neural network's simulation technology to design cutting tools can enhance the design more precision, shorten the design period and can reduce the non-necessary waste. Compare with traditional artificially draft and polynomial fitting cutting edge, it can enhance the design precision and efficiency of cutting tools and reduce the workload, it has very good using value and wide application foreground.
