Microwave Photonics combines the advantages of mobile wireless communication and the perfect performance of optical communication such as low cost, small in size, wide-bandwidth capability and immunity to electromagnetic interference (EMI). It has attracted intensive research interest, and offers wide applications in microwave and millimeter sensing, communications and signal processing. Variable optical devices which can make the design and reconfigurability more convenience are very important in microwave photonics systems.In this thesis, a universal serial bus (USB) based real-time control circuit for the Variable gain tilt filter (VGTF) is designed. Then some theoretical and experimental results on microwave photonics using VGTF are proposed.In the first part of this paper, the characteristic of the transparent electro-optic ceramic material OptoCeramic(?)VGTF is studied and a universal serial bus (USB) based real-time control circuit for the VGTF is designed.In the second part, some theoretical and experimental research on microwave photonic filter is done. And a reconfigurable microwave photonic transversal filter using the VGTF is achieved. Also the tunability of the filter has been realized by means of using tunable dispersive medium.In the third part, the application of VGTF in a radio over fiber (RoF) link is studied. A dynamic tunable gain-flattening scheme of RoF system frequency response is proposed. The experimental results show that the gain fluctuation has been significantly decreased. Also the method to change frequency range of the gain-flattening system is achieved.
