Media access control mechanism in wireless network is used to coordinate the mobile nodes to make use of the wireless resource efficiently, support flexible multiplex control and QoS management. The object of wireless media access control technology is to improve the system throughput, ensure fairness and reliability and reduce access delay. Wireless Personal Area Network operates within a personal space and the devices communicating with each other compose a wireless network without any center management device. Ultra-wideband is a promising wireless communication technology within short distance. Wireless Personal Area Network which physical layer uses ultra-wideband will satisfy people's need to transfer super high data rate.First, the wireless media access control model and performance analysis are illustrated. Then based on the basic principle of media access control, several types of media access control mechanisms are compared and analyzed.In chapter 3 of this paper, the IEEE 802.15.3 media access control protocol which is considered as one of the most suitable protocols for use in ultra-wideband networks is studied in detail. According to the contention access period of the superframe, the basic idea of maximum traffic is presented: a PNC can setup the length of CAP based on the number of DEVs, and the total transmission data can achieve maximal at any point of time.Chapter 4 is divided into three parts. In the first part, the IEEE 802.15.3 media access control protocol which is considered as one of the most suitable protocols for use in ultra-wideband networks is studied in detail. Some suggestions are given to improve the throughput efficiency of the protocol. Then, taking into account the precise position location of ultra-wideband, space reuse based media access control mechanism for ultra-wideband systems is put forward on the basis of power control. This technology may allow multi pairs DEVs to communicate simultaneous in the same time slot, as a result the whole network throughput is improved. Finally, the energy saving mode of MAC layer is discussed.At last, the paper is summarized. The wireless media access control in ultra-wideband WPAN and power saving mechanism are reviewed, and then the research orientation related to these fields are also introduced.
