The new ITU-T/ISO/IEC standard H.264/AVC for video compression applies mostof the new fruits in video compression, compared with the various existing standards,to obtain the same video quality, the bit rate of H.264 can reduce to less than half of theformer standards, this also means the video quality can be greatly improved whenadopts the same bit rate. The features of H.264,the encoding and decoding of data are discussed in thispaper. A deep study is made on the basic principles of the context-based adaptivebinary arithmetic coding (CABAC), and the realization of algorithms is studied as well. The study focuses on the entropy-encoding and entropy-decoding schemes of CABAC:the binarization in entropy-encoding scheme, context modeling and the detailed modeldesign of entropy-encoding and entropy-decoding are discussed. Based on the analysisof the similarities and differences of the encoding and decoding, we realized theencoding and decoding of data with the CABAC.
