In recent years, wireless local area network (WLAN) develops rapidly and its application is getting widely, but it also has some disadvantages. A new wireless network technology, Wireless Mesh Network (WMN), gradually becomes one of the key technologies of the next generation wireless network.This dissertation focuses on wireless mesh network based on WLAN (WLAN Mesh). First, a survey on the development and current status of WLAN and WMN is presented. Then its characteristics, topology, development trend, application scenarios and standardization are introduced. Then, the key technique problems in WLAN Mesh, such as multi hop routing mechanism, security and fast roaming and handoff, are introduced. Considering its characteristics, an efficient solution is proposed for the fast handoff and the simulation results show that the handoff delay is reduced effectively.After a brief introduction of the integration architecture for the next-generation network based on wireless mesh network, the framework and subsystem of the wireless mesh network based on WLAN is also proposed in detail. Finally, we give an implementation of the communication subsystem of this WLAN Mesh in Linux OS and present the test results and final conclusion.
