Underwater measuring unit is important to the survey of the ocean environment. Compared with the propelled by electricity, underwater measuring unit propelled by thermal engine has many advantages, such as longer working time, larger working depth and smaller noise. As a result, it will have more foregrounds in the field of scientific and military tasks.Thermal engine is the drive-device of underwater measuring unit driven by temperature difference energy. This thesis introduces the theory of the thermal engine and application area.In this thesis, we also analyzed the dynamics of the underwater unit propelled by thermal engine. This thesis studied the dynamic model moving on a vertical line, and gave the stability of it. Based on the result of mode experiment and the analysis of dynamics , we have finished the mechanical design which can measure the microstructure profiler.The study of control system is divided two parts. One is the vertical movement of the underwater measuring unit , another is the measurement of microstructure profiler. The vertical movement system is based on small energy cost and high security while considered of small and briefness ,we adopt the whole control style which a center control and harmonize other units. The microstructure system mostly deals with the shear probe signal.In July of 2005 ,we finished of our experiment in thousand lakes ,all work well.
