With the development of the computer and information technologies, identity identification technology by computer makes quiet great progress. Because of the invariability and uniqueness of the fingerprints, the technology of fingerprint verification and identification has become one of the widest used identity identification technologies. It relates to a lot of fields, including pattern recognition, digital image processing, digital signal processing, and artificial intelligence and so on. It has great worth in criminal identification, network safety, information facility safety etc. While a significant progress has been made in the research and development of automatic fingerprint recognition, the application of technology does not prevail at present. The reason is that the accuracy and the speed of recognition are far from satisfactory to many practical circumstances. To improve the performance of automatic fingerprint recognition is meaningful both in theory aspect and promoting its application. For this reason, this thesis has discussed the problems of fingerprint image enhancement, binarization, thinning, fingerprint minutiae extraction, fingerprint minutiae matching, using the knowledge of digital image processing, pattern recognition and neural network. We discussed partial fingerprint, the difficulty problem in fingerprint recognition system, and a new fingerprint minutiae matching method based on neural network is discussed for the first time. The major works and contributions of this thesis are listed in the following:(1)The paper discusses the history of fingerprint recognition, the development of fingerprint recognition. And we learn about the main subject of fingerprint recognition.(2)Fingerprint recognition system includes steps of fingerprint image enhancement, binarization, thinning, minutia extraction and matching. The paper discusses and studies a number of problems about the automatic fingerprint identification system and some algorithms are improved. Experimental results show that the method is more efficiency.(3) ANN is an information process mode which is used for simulating biologic neural systems.
