With the development of technology in the multimedia and internet, how to effectively arrange , store, transmit and retrieve the image to explore the coding techniques of high compression ratio is the key for signal processing. The research for the image coding technology has been conducted for decades. Such technology as DPCM, DCT and so on. JPEG, MPEG, H.261 based on the DCT have been the standard for the international image compression, which promotes the extensive application of the compression technology. But some disadvantages are found for these measurements such as the block effect and insufficient use of the HVS. Thus efforts have been made to propose the new compression method. For example, the fractal image compression, wavelet transmission image compression, artificial neuro network image compression have been created. Image compression technology is taking on the road toward the high compression speed with excellent quality. Image compression based on wavelet transmission has become the focus for the research in question.Wavelet transmission is the analysis method based on time-frequency with frame unchanged whereas the form changing. With wavelet the time resolution of the high frequency and the one of frequency resolution in the low frequency can be achieved. In this way the information of signal such as voice and image, can be obtained effectively. Compared to the traditional approach of image coding, wavelet transmission merits in terms of the compression ratio and coding quality that the traditional method can not parallel in the DCT. Therefore with these advantages it is authorized as the international image-coding standard for JPEG-2000 and MPEG-4. With the establishment of these standard, image compression technology based on wavelet transmission will become more and more popular.Reviewing the research of image coding based on the wavelet transmission and the updated wavelet image coding, this paper discusses the significant technology of image coding based on the wavelet transmission insightfully and systematically. It is consisted as the following parts: (1) Elaborating essential multi-resolution in terms of the discrete wavelet .Discussing the principle and procedure of the wavelet construction. Analyzing the relationship between the wavelet base and image compression performance .(2) Illustrating the constructing principle of lifting scheme, analyzing and comparing the advantage and disadvantage of it and Mallat arithmetic from the different point of view (3) systematically reiterating embedded image compression arithmetic of wavelet with detailed analysis of their principle and implementation procedure.
