With the rapid development of information technology and improvement of the computer application technology, the new generation of information system for medical treatment has expanded from the separate HIS (Hospital Information System), RIS (Radiology Information System) into the integrate hospital management information system which including patient information, medical image and the management information in medicine.PACS(Picture Archiving and Communication System) is an important part of the integrated hospital management information which represents the highest level in the application of medical information system and is the future of hospital information development. The key technologies of PACS develop rapidly within the recent 20 years. However, there are still many problems left when setting up a genuine PACS, such as storage media, the image acquisition, the high quality of image display, image compression with high compression ratio et al. These technologies play an important role in the development of PACS.The thesis further studies the image data compression key technology in PACS. Firstly, the article introduces the history of PACS and data compression, the information theory basis of data compression and wavelet transform from chapter 1 to chapter 3.The chapter 4 analyses the JPEG compression algorithm and its shortcoming, introduces the newest generation compression standard for still image—JPEG2000. The chapter 5 is author main work and is the most important of the article also. It firstly introduces the DICOM3.0 data formate and file format. Secondly, it presents a medical image compression system based on JPEG 2000, which can realize the lossless and lossy medical image data compression easily, and gives a performance evaluation for still medical image between JPEG2000, H.264 intraframe encoder and JPEG in terms of PSNR.The experimental results show that JPEG2000 achieves better reconstructed image quality than JPEG,and H.264's intraframe encoder achieves better reconstructed image quality than JPEG2000.These results demonstrated the H.264's intraframe encoder is potential methods for developing next generation still image coding standard. In the end of the article, it forecasts the future of mutliframe medical image data compression based on Motion JPEG2000, and provides a mutliframe DICOM 3.0 file formate based on JPEG2000.
