The usual inverse halftoning method is designed for ideal bi-level halftoning images. When it is applied to scanned halftoning images, the result is often poor and unpredictable. So it is meaningful to study the inverse halftoning for scanned color halftoning. The goal is to find a good inverse halftoning method that recovers high quality image from its scanned color version. To this aim, the dot-overlap phenomenon and structure noise generated in printing and scanning process are analyzed. Then the printer and scanner models are developed. The algorithm of digital color inverse halftoning based on scanning is proposed when we apply the inverse operations of the printing and scanning processes on a scanned image. The algorithm transforms the scanned color image to a color halftoning image by getting rid of noise (including printer and scanner noise). Then different usual inverse halftoning methods are applied to the color halftoning image.
