Although the shapes of plants various species is difference, they have the common character of self-similarity and self-reproduce. With the development of fractal theory, simulate plants using fractal became an important problem on computer simulate field. This thesis purpose investigating and practicing the method of simulating plants based on fractal theory in theory study and applied software.Much research has been conducted on plant simulation based on iteration function system (IFS) and L system. However these methods still need to be developed and improved, for now it is difficult to simulate various plants with different shapes realistically and naturally, moreover the forming mechanism and rules of the natural scenes also need to be further studied.There are four methods on simulating plants based on fractal theory currently: L-system, Iterated Function System, Diffusion Limited Aggregation Model and Practical System. Because the emphasis of research is tree and plants of similar tree in nature, the author chooses the L-system as the foundation of research after a comparative analysis to simulating object and the character of algorithm. There are four improvements in L-system in this paper including changes of angle increment, rendering the trunk by curves, adding to random factor and defining the plants' organs. That enhances the reality and the third dimension of the plants simulated.Aiming at the simulation of plants structure and form, the paper brings forword one new method baded on the Voronoi theory and iterative fractal system, and makes one micro-pragram to realize it. The element defined is the base of the system, we can change the simulated form of plants by interactive adjusting the element form up to the system can simulate the plants form and structure realistically. We can get hold of the experience parameter by the system .The general fractal based methods for plant simulation are L system and iteration function system (IFS). It is difficult to realize the natural and realistic plant simulation only by use of the traditional L system or iteration function system (IFS) separately owing to the limitation of each method. In this paper, the main characteristics of both methods are analyzed thoroughly, and a novel plant simulation method based on fusion of L system and IFS is proposed, videlicet construct the plants form by L-system and render the plants leaves by IFS system, so that the merits of different approaches can be combined. Especially defining the leaves organ and rendering it by IFS system, it reduces the fussiness and shortens the time of rendering third-dimension plants. The simulating results demonstrate that the, presented method can simulate plants much more freely, naturally and realistically.
