Lyn: A New Lightweight Virtualization Technology

Virtualization has been one of the hottest technologies in the world. Generally, Multi-tasks must be done with several servers. But with virtualization, it can be changed. The present virtualizations include full-virtualization, para-virtualization, and container-based virtualization and so on. And usually both para-virtualization and container-based virtualization are called lightweight virtualization.Lightweight virtualization can enhance the overall efficiency of traditional virtualization but have high overhead and low utilization rate of resources. Even they can't work in some special cases that need both resource isolation and low overhead.Our Lyn virtualization technology combines the traditional lightweight virtualization with module architecture, and realizes the hybrid virtualization on the virtual platform composed of VMM and Main OS domain. That is a breakthrough compared to the traditional lightweight virtualization. Lyn has a good representation in the services which need high quality of security and resource isolation and high utilization rate.During finishing this paper, I did lots of work as below:1. Design and complement the framework of Lyn virtual machine, and realize the hybrid virtualization on the new virtual platform.2. Design and complement the Guest OS control services module which can load multiply guest os. Resolve the problem such as multiply CPU and memory management.3. Design and complement VC remote-admin core services module, realize resource isolation and security isolation with container-based virtualization.4. Complement a series of debug method for virtual machine. And design a framework for automatic test.5. Complement an interface with Python which make users select virtualization mode freely.It shows that Lyn has a better system performance compared to the traditional virtualization technology. With Lyn virtualization technology, the server will get higher utilization rate; the guest operating system will enhance the isolation; the enterprise has lower cost.
