The key technology in designing of RF transceiver and an omnidirectional broadband microstrip antenna that can be used as array element for TD-SCDMA smart antenna system are discussed in this paper.The background of the third generation mobile communication and Chinese TD-SCDMA proposal are briefly introduced firstly. Then the basic concept, technical advantages, operation principle and main structure of smart antenna are also discussed.The design of an omnidirectional broadband microstrip antenna, which can be used as antenna element in smart antenna system is introduced emphatically, and the theoretical analysis and experimental research are carried out.In regard to the design of RF transceiver, its structure and the position and function of every module are summarized firstly, then the wireless specifications of the base station, which will be applied in the TD-SCDMA system are analyzed. According to the specification, the intermediate frequency and key chips will be selected, and then the design will be obtained. Estimate the performance of the design, and simulate it by the ADS further.In the end, the main work in this paper is summarized and proposals for improving the system performance in the future design are also submitted.
