Recently, the communication bandwidth has expanded from C band (1528-1562nm) to L band (1570-1610nm) and S band (1458-1520nm) due to the rapid development of communications. Raman fiber amplifier (RFA), based on Stimulated Raman Scattering, is the only amplifier that can work on the whole wave band from 1270nm to 1670nm. Since 1990's, RFA has become more attractive because of its particular characteristics such as wideband and good noise performance. Some numerical and experimental research work on RFA is discussed in this thesis, including numerical simulation method and the development of a distributed RFA.Simulation is very valuable for the design of RFA. The average power analysis method is usually used in the solution of differential equations which have multi-values in different boundaries. A novel matrix iterative method based on the theory of average power analysis is presented in this thesis. The method has two advantages: high speed and simple matrix iteration. For the same accuracy the method can save the calculation time. A set of RFA simulation software which faces to users is developed using Visual C++ 6.0 based on this method. The simulation software is a useful tool for designing the RFA. The performance of a multi-wavelength backward pumped RFA is simulated by the software as an example. Besides, another novel simulation method called as simulated annealing algorithm (SA) based on genetic algorithm (GA) is presented by us for optimization of RFA. The advantages of This method are that it can not only improve the local-search ability of GA but also overcome the SA's shortcoming as insufficiently utilizing initial information. As a result, the method improves the optimal quality as well as the convergence speed, and it can get the purpose that any single algorithm mentioned above can not get.By using the simulation software, a distributed RFA is designed and experimentally studied, which could be utilized in a real transmission system proved by test results.
