Recent years have witnessed a great development in optical telecommunication, due to the increasing demand for information. To meet the ever-demanding standards for optical telecommunication network, people have proposed the concept of all-optical network. Thus, as a key device used in optical switching and optical logic, bi-stable laser has been widely studied.In our study, we have proposed a simple design of Erbium-doped fiber ring laser and observed distinguishing bi-stability phenomenon. In order to study the intrinsic mechanism of this bi-stability phenomenon, we measure the open loop gain of the laser. And as expected, the result can be used to successfully explain the reason underlying the phenomenon.Therefore, our focus was shifted from the study of bi-stability to the study of the unique gain of our Erbium-doped fiber ring laser.
