EBCOT is the nuclear coding algorithm of JPEG2000 standard, leading JPEG2000 to high-performance in company with DWT. However, at low bit rates, the efficiency of this embedded coding may be lowed, when the images contain abundance of detail information. One can not be satisfied with either the subjective or objective quality of the compressed images. In the embedded coding, it is well known, low-frequency information is retained with high-frequency information discarded. Therefore, the higher compression ratio, the compressed images become worse for more high-frequency information discarded. The paper proposes a new post-processing algorithm of model-based edge by studying wavelet transform, embedded coding, and available post-processing algorithms of model-based edge. Based on analyzing model of quantization error of the embedded coding in this paper, we reconstruct the degraded edge with different-degree compensation. The post-processing algorithm can improve the quality of the decompressed images, reduce the blurring and ringing effect, without changing available compression algorithms. In addition, this post-processing algorithm of model edge-based processes some strong points such as simple structure, low-costing storage, easy to implement with hardware. In the last chapter, a realization of the algorithm based FPGA is introduced, by simulating and testing, it is verified its performance and value in engineering application.
