With the high development of Internet technology and increasing Internet users, the Internet has become one of the main medias of information issuing. Most network research has focused on technologies to collect valuable information on the Internet and to provide user with more humankind service.RSS protocol, which has been proposed and developed in recent years, is widely used for message packaging and delivering on the Internet. Many Internet applications use RSS to deliver information, such as blog, news website, search, e-commercial and so on. Most RSS research has thus far emphasized RSS technology applications in different fields. However, few research focus on RSS packets or flows identification and the behavior characteristics of RSS website.This paper analyzes RSS protocols and packet format and presents two methodologies to identify RSS application traffic from large-scale data. The statistic of amount of RSS users in the campus network is given by combining two methodologies. One relies on the Request-URL payload in the HTTP request message while the other relies on the payload of the first packet of RSS reply message.In pursuit of the behavior characteristics of RSS website, we embark on the measurement of RSS traffic, in particular the frequency and scale of RSS files updating, RSS files redundancy and traffic amount. We find that: the mechanisms of RSS push service cause bandwidth waste; the frequency and scale of RSS files updating indicate the character of the channel; users can save bandwidth by setting a longer RSS explorer updating interval.
