Since the nineties, medical image processing technique has developed fast. Image registration becomes one of the most important branches of medical image processing technique, and it has been made into practical clinical use. This paper discusses image registration technique in details. Based on mutual information between images, we register multimodality medical images.First, this paper generally introduced the development and classification of registration technique, and provides a short review on several registration methods. Then, following the image registration process, the paper further discusses mutual information based image transformation, interpolation and optimization algorithms. In the end of the paper, we introduce a mutual information based multi-image registration method.In the image transformation and interpolation part, we first do image preprocessing over multimodality medical images. Then, based on the result, this paper discusses how the interpolation process may affect the mutual information between images, and use improved partial volume registration method to get more smooth mutual information surface.In the optimization part, we also give a short introduce on optimization algorithms, and design one dimensional and high dimensional optimization algorithm. With this optimization algorithm, we realize the mutual information based medical image registration. To further accelerate registration speed, we also provide and realize wavelets based coarse to fine image registration method. At the end of this paper, to solve the awkwardness of mutual information definition on high dimension, we give out the definition of high dimensional mutual information, and apply it on multi-image registration.
