This paper briefly describes the structure and major characteristics of optical fibers, the manufacturing process of optical fibers ,the equipments and the important process of drawing. It also introduces the general kowledges of fiber coating ,diameter - forming process and the control principle of forming the fiber secondary coating diameter by the simple theoretical analysis and the massive experiments ,which elaborates the curve relationship between the secondary coating diameter and six important parameters (diameter of secondary coating die D, pressure of supplied UV resin P, velocity of drawing V, the primary coating diameter d1 and inlet temperature of optical fiber T2 )which could affect secondary coating diameter.According to the extent of influence of six important parameters on the secondary coating diameter, in addition, considering the actual condition, we selected the primary coating diameter d1 as an experimental parameter, which worked under the closed loop automatic control. And then we conducted a plan of experiment which goal is to restrict secondary coating diameter in 243±3μm. Finally some abnormal phenomena which frequently appears in the process of fiber manufacturing are introduced and several ways of solving this problem are presented.
