This paper introduces basic concepts, characteristics, development and state-of-the-art of impulse radio UWB. Based on that the signal characteristics, reception, the BER performance under the condition of AWGN channel, the performance of multipath and multi-access are analyzed and compared, the power spectral density (PSD) of the unified signal model of the random IR-UWB pulses is deduced, and, moreover, a TH-PPSM modulation scheme with higher speed, better anti-multipath performance, simper structure, is also presented. This paper applies the deduced PSD expression to the examples that analyze and compare the PSDs of several typical modulation signals with or without the uniformly distributed timing jitters, and the result indicates that the timing jitter smoothes the spectrum and alleviates the signals'interferences with other narrowband communication systems. Furthermore, this expression can be used to estimate what effect the changes of the signal parameters have on the PSD of the signal, without knowing the detailed design procedure of the pulse sequence.TH-PPSM modulation technique and its reception scheme are expatiated, and the modulation and demodulation performance of the system is analyzed. The result shows, when K orthogonal pulses are employed the transmission speed can amount to the times as high as the traditional modulation schemes, and the number of the required correlators is only half times as many as the number for the combined modulation of TH-PPM and PSM. When K=2, the BER of the system increases as the bit number per symbol increases, and when the same pulse shapes are employed, the BER of 1-bit scheme and 2-bit scheme is between the BER performance of TH-BPSK and TH-PPM(or, PSM),the BER of 3-bit scheme is higher than OOK, when the transmit power is equal ,the BER of 1-bit scheme and 2-bit scheme becomes slightly higher than TH-PPM.
