Wireless sensor networks are composed of a large amount of nodes, which is small in size and scarce in energy. These tiny sensor nodes, which consist of sensing, data processing, and communication components, collaborate with each other in an ad hoc way. Due to its high degree of self-configuration, wireless sensor networks are widely deployed in hazardous and untethered area, such as military applications and environmental applications. To make it more adaptive for the changes of time, environment, and requirement, it is necessary to update some programs which had been embedded in these nodes before deployed. Wireless sensor networks, which work in bad enviroment and have very limited energy, bring a new challenge for the research of code update. In this paper, code update in wireless sensor networks is explored. The paper is organized as followed:Firstly, the relative work about the code update is studied in the second chapter. The mechanism of code update, the factors having effect on reliability and energy consumption, are explored. Some solutions are also provided. Furthermore, some analyses about the code distribution protocols and code update schemes are also made. Their performance is evaluated and the existing problems and shortcomings, on which this paper is based , are also figured out. Then, a topology control protocol for code distribution, which is based on the notion of cluster, is proposed. The motivations are introduced. In this protocol, based on the analyses of the existing clustering algorithms, a clustering algorithm with maximal residual energy is provided. A tree structure is constructed by the proposed algorithm so that the cluster-heads are on a spanning tree rooted at the sink. Theoretically analyzing and simulation experiments are made to validate these algorithms and the results show that the cluster structure and the tree structure have the CDTCP protocol appropriate to the code distribution in wireless sensor networks.Based on the proposed topology control protocol, a code distribution protocol based on energy efficient clustering and a code update model are designed. The results of simulations and analyses show that ECCDP protocol...
