H.264 is a new video coding/decoding standard among those which have performed best. It is applied in various kinds of practical projects in these years more and more. This research adopts the coding/decoding tools provided by H.264 in a digital video processing sub-system. Therefore, this thesis lays stress on H.264 standard, implements several levels of optimization to the system, and obtains notable effects.Firstly, this thesis reviews the evolution of image coding/decoding theory, summarizes the technology framework of several image/video coding/decoding standards, designs a contrasting research to these standards, interoperates the origin of the H.264's advantages, and investigates the principal structure and the key modules of H.264, as establishing necessary theory basis for the practical application.Secondly, after introducing the subjective/objective assessments of the video coding/decoding system, the thesis compares the performance of H.264 to the other standards'performance, opens out the special predominance of H.264 in detail. And then, the thesis takes out the intra-prediction module, expatiates the working principle, compares its performance to JPEG2000's which is the most advanced static image compressing standard, and educes either standard's applying occasion. Finally, basing on the above theory research and the existing hardware scheme, the optimization probabilities is discussed among the layers of the standard entrails, arithmetic promotions and program optimizations. The optimizations are carried out in the software simulation circumstance, and obtain a notable effect, which boosts the coding speed by 60% with the same image quality, showing an applying prospect.
