3D face modeling has been a hotspot in computer vision and computer graphics for the last 30 years. It has broad applications in film visual effect, human-machine interaction, computer game, communication, etc. Using LS5000 3D laser scanner, this paper presents an efficient realistic 3D face modeling algorithm for creating virtual actor in film visual effect field. Input the point cloud and un-calibrated photographs of the real actor's face as well as little user interaction, the algorithm can generate realistic 3D face model which includes geometry model, texture model and deformable model. The output 3D face model is ideal to be directly used in the film visual effect field and can greatly enhance the speed of creating virtual actor.First we construct a generic face mesh which vertex number, vertex distribution, mesh topology and 2D parameterization are very suitable for the film visual effect field; In order to represent the complex expressions and moves of human face, we construct the deformable model of the generic face mesh. Using LS5000 3D laser scanner, we can acquire the point cloud data of the real actor's face. Due to the disadvantage of the laser scanner, point cloud data can not be directly used in creating virtual actor because of the problem of too many vertexes as well as data missing and data noise. This paper presents an efficient surface simplification algorithm based on generic head mesh conforming using a low resolution generic head mesh to converge to the original point cloud data. Our method is efficient to reduce the amount of date and preserve the detail. Then we present a method to generate the skin texture of the...
