The development of sensor technology, Micro-Electro-Mechanical -Systems(MEMS), modern networks and wireless communication, promotes the emergence and development of wireless sensor network(WSN). The WSN can directly get physical information from the actual world. It can be applied to many fields including military defence, industrial and agricultural control, city management, biologic treatment, environment detection, antiterrorism and the remote control of dangerous circumstance. It becomes a hot research topic for its extensive foreground.As a special class of network form, the WSN needs a network protocol for communication on the air and supporting technology for the kernel structure. Of course it still needs a design principle for both hardware and software. And an effective developing platform is also obligatory.This thesis begins with analyzing the IEEE 802.15.4 protocol and Zigbee specification. According to the developing principle for communication system and embedded system, after selecting an appropriate hardware and software platform, I focus on building the support software platform, designing the structure of software and implementing protocol stack. The target hardware is based on Freescale's one-shop solution: MC13192 is the RF transceiver, MC9S08GT60 and MCF5213 act as the main controller for RFD and FFD respectively. The target is to get a star-topology network according with Zigbee Specification and provide an API interface for application level software. When developing final application, user can customize the protocol stack for performance and cost purpose.
