With the development of network technology and its broad application, information retrieval has been paid more and more attention. information retrieval system plays an important role at communication between the user and resource on the network. The traditional information retrieval methods concentrate on the way of key-word matching. Semantic understanding, the most important of information retrieval system has not been involved.To solve this problem of above, this paper regards field ontology as the foundation of semantic understanding. Ontology is a kind of modal that is used to describe the concepts and the relations of them. Field ontology is a kind of ontology. It includes abundance knowledge and semantic relations of this field. Through applying these resources to information retrieval system by a certain way, it is impossible to solve the problem of semantic understand insufficiency in a way.This paper firstly introduces the background—Semantic Web; analyzed shortage of traditional information retrieval methods, then proposed semantic method; correlated ontology concepts. Then we introduced the ontology building process.In the following we look up some common algrithms on description logic which is the logic foundation of semantic web; later we demonstrated semantic retrieval method in detail; then we provide an approach to semantic information retrieval - a system for Olympic 2008, in which we proposed a system model and reasoning algorithm ,also we do some softeware enginnering work on the system .At last, we did some experiments: created ontology, developed core classes for inference using Jena, and more, we did some retrieve testing .These proved the method's feasibility & performance.
