Fiber gratings represent another important milestone in the history of optical fiber communication after erbium-doped fiber amplifier. With the improvement of fabrication technology, fiber grating is one of the most promising and representative optical devices. It makes complicated optical communication and sensing network into being, meanwhile, greatly extends applied areas of optical fiber technology. Thus, the studies on theory and application of fiber gratings become very important.In this paper we begin with the foundation theory of fiber gratings, introduce the conceptions, sorts, fabrication methods and applications of fiber gratings, set up strain sensing model and temperature sensing model of fiber Bragg gratings( shortly FBGs); then investigate a new type photon device— fluorescence fiber grating, we test its thermal and strain characteristic; finally some experimental researches have been done to study that FBGs used in bridge model and planar 2-D strain measurement.The conclusions of experimental studies on fluorescence fiber grating show that, this new type device can afford novel ways of solving the cross-talking problem or simultaneously measuring of temperature and strain. And the results of 2-D strain measurement have instructive significance for multi-dimensions measurement, can be hopefully used in structure health monitoring, smart configuration and other areas.
