The subject is a part of "Distributed Medical Image Processing and Analyzing Platform ", which belongs to emphasized science and technology projects in Jilin Province. It aims at developing a 3D medical image processing workstation on common computers. The accuracy, reliability, real-time quality of 3D image insures doctors giving effective diagnoses, treatment, or setting down operation plans. It is one of the important basis for implementing computer-assistant diagnosis and treatment.The core of visualization technology In science is the image visualization of 3D-space data field. The three dimension visualization algorithm is divided into two parts: surface rendering and direct volume rendering. The surface rendering extracts isosurface from 3D volume data, and then uses traditional graphical technology to display. The volume rendering takes the data as a whole to show. Marching Cubes is a classic surface rendering algorithm which extracts isosurface based on regular volume data. This paper researches on Marching Cubes. Considering medical images have such characters as high differentiating rates, huge data sets, etc. The paper brings forward an improved surface rendering algorithm. This algorithm leaves out interpolation and a new isosurface inter-connection strategy can partly solve the problem of two different connections. It also greatly reduces the number of triangular slices to be rendered and accelerates the algorithm. With the experiment, we can see the results are ideal. On the other side, we focus on Ray Casting in volume rendering. In the paper, it summarizes accelerated algorithm for volume rendering. Finally, it realizes a 3D medical image workstation. The system provides a parsing function for Digital Imaging and Communication in Medicine (DICOM). Besides, it can do surface rendering, volume rendering, interaction between humans and computers, etc.
