In wood processing, the external geometry shape of log is the key factor in constraining the saw cutting. It has become the primary issue that identifying the shape of log precisely in wood processing industry. The method of measuring through manual work which has been used for a long time is seriously affected by manmade factors and its operating efficiency is lower. This will not be able to meet the trend of modernized wood processing. Therefore, improving the accuracy of identifying log shape and realizing numeric controlled and intelligent processing for detecting and identifying log shape is the critical problem which needs solving urgently in wood making industry of our country.The paper is a part of "Numeric controlled laser and video frequency distinguish, manufacture timber technology introduced item" which is supported by the fund of national "948" project (2001-27). It elaborates how to research and develop the numeric controlled system for identifying log shape on our self-developed MQK3102 log shape recognizing machine. It puts forward that measuring the three-dimensional geometric data of log surface shape, reappearing log shape and analyzing and managing shape parameters of log is all controlled by computer.Under the existing conditions in laboratory, the study centralizes on real-timely collecting three-dimensional geometric data of log surface and processing imitate reappearance of log shape by computer, in which data collection and the choice for the methods of imitate reappearance is the key point. And according to specific mathematical models and description theories, the diameter levels of the log's cross section and other shape parameters are analyzed and computed. Meanwhile, the database technology support is also brought into the log shape identifying system to establish the database of log shape parameters to realize integrate management. Taking into account the work involved in the experiment and the theory is established on the basis of log surface shape description, and also combined with the hardware structural characteristics of log shape recognizing machine, in the paper the system software is designed by Visual C++6.0 programming language and the modular designing method. Through the tests on sample logs, the system comes to a certain identifying requirements. The study in this paper will provide good theoretical and applied foundation for the industrialized promotion of log shape identification.
