In recent years, Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imaging of the ocean has received considerable attention in the area of ocean remote sensing. Because of the time-variant reflectivity of ocean surface, The mapping of an ocean wave spectrum into a SAR image spectrum is a complicated nonlinear process, and movement of ships also degrade the quality of SAR image of the ships. In order to get the better understanding of SAR ocean image, The following work has been carried out in this paper:1, In order to improve the quality of SAR image of ships, two auto-focus algorithms were compared and a new method was developed to estimated Doppler center frequency of ships;2, Radar backscattering theory of ocean surface and modulation mechanism of SAR signal was studied;3, The simulation model of SAR imaging of ocean surface was studied and the effect of imaging parameters and ocean parameters on SAR imaging of ocean was discussed;4, The nonlinear process of SAR imaging of the ocean surface was studied and a new method was proposed to remove the nonlinear effects. Finally the validity of this method is demonstrated by experiments for simulated data and real SAR resource data on ocean surface.
