The main purpose for the fault-tolerant cooperative editing system lies in the transparent fault recover, cutting down the rollback computing as much as possible, offering a reliable communication tier for the system. After proposing a fault detector, the fault-tolerant model is built up and the corresponding algorithms are presented. Based on a fault-tolerant model, the paper brings up a solution to control the message package with consideration of the feature of the process failure and the link failure in fault-tolerant editing system. By measuring the edit distance and document similarity, the data flow in the network is reduced and the efficiency and the reliability are therefore raised up. On the other side, based on the replication architecture, the network abnormity leads to the network partition which the paper analyzes. And by the k-consistence theory, there are explanation and the merging path for the network partition.From the point of view of the paper, the requirement analyzes of the cooperative editing system for Z-Office are firstly introduced. Secondly, a fault-tolerant model is brought forward and the network partition based on k-consistence theory is reanalyzed. Thirdly, by measuring the edit distance and document similarity, a solution for reducing message package is design in line with the efficiency of the system and tested by OPNET modeler. Fourthly, communication protocols and data structures are designed for implementing the fault-tolerant cooperative editing communication tier. Finally, the fault-tolerant cooperative editing communication tier is tested and its performance of the system availability and MTTR are evaluated.This thesis discusses and implements the practical issues of a fault tolerance in a special CSCW system. Such issues are the fault-tolerant model, the process transaction, message package control, and the application of the k-consistence theory in the fault-tolerant system. It hopefully is helpful for the developers in the relative fields.
