With the information age's coming and development, people are not only satisfied with the increase of information transport speed, but also request higher reliability of information. How to guarantee the high reliability of the high speed transmission system already comes to be a key problem to the researchers who design the systems.For the sake of improving the system reliability and reducing the BER, we introduced the error control technology of FEC besides other methods in long haul optical transmission systems. This technology can reduce the BER by several scalar levels. RS is a common use code. This code can correct random errors. and restrain burst errors. I use RS code in the theory analysis of this thesis.Along with the using time increasing, outside nature factors and man-made factors, the optical system performance maybe deteriorate, even occur communication interrupt, made great economy loss. In order to guarantee the performance of the optical transmission system, we should detect the error and deal with it immediately, that comes kinds of technologies for performance supervise.In this paper, I researched the next parts aim at the problems above.Analyze the FEC development in optical transmission systems. Give out the three generations of FEC, representative codes and appliance cases. Focus on RS code and LDPC code which are used most. Compare some kinds of codes on their advantage,...
