Ultra-wideband (UWB) radio is a candidate technology for future communication and location applications.Firstly, this thesis investigates a ranging and location method employing UWB pulses. Due to the high time resolution of UWB signals, time-based location estimation schemes usually provide better accuracy than the others. The TOA ranging method can be employed.Secondly, this thesis presents the analytic and simulation results of the performance of UWB relative location estimation in wireless sensor networks. In single-hop networks, increasing the node density results in continuously increasing location accuracy. However, in multi-hop networks for a fixed number of hops, as sensor nodes are added to the network the overall location accuracy improves converging toward a fixed asymptotic value, whereas for a fixed number of links to the reference nodes, the location accuracy of a node decreases the greater the number of hops from the reference nodes. Finally, this thesis investigates the relationship between the number of hops from a source node to a destination node and the range estimation accuracy for multi-hop wireless networks with a focus on RSS-based and TOA-based systems.
