With the wide application of fiber laser in many fields such as optic-communication, medical science , sensor and spectroscopy etc, as one of the important represention in fiber laser, EDFA ( Er-doped fiber amplifier) has already been developed rapidly. Lots of institutions are all devoted to the research and development of EDFA.History and current situation of fiber laser are reviewed in this paper, and the characteristic , classification and application of the fiber laser are summed, too. Based on principle of the fiber laser and theories such as velocity equation etc., the operation principle of EDFA is explained, and the main technology of current EDFA is introduced in this paper. Then the important properties parameter of EDFA is discussed , such as gain , noise , threshold value and output power etc.. It offers the theoretical foundation for measurement of EDFA properties parameter. Upon this, a kind of testing method of properties parameter of EDFA is optimally designed in this paper. When the incident light wavelength is from 1530nm to 1560nm, the gain and noise coefficient of EDFA which is pumped by 980nm wavelength are measured by using the new interpo-lation technique, the performance curve is drawn up.The measured result shows the gain and the noise coefficient of EDFA which is pumped by 980nm wavelength are respectively flatter and lower, EDFA wavelength can be used in the commercial communication system.
