Geographic Information System (GIS) is a geo-referenced database system, which links digital maps and attribute-value tables together and facilitates the social application of geo-info technologies. With more and more GIS products and service emerging in the commercial markets, some aspects of designing consideration including the operational ease, efficiency, user-friendliness, interface design and inter-operability certainly have been ignored, thus retard the quick diffusion of potential user-application. In this sense, the proper design of interface and inter-operability has increasingly become one of the major concerns in GIS development. In procedure, a proper design of GIS should follow the man-machine interface theory. The success of a geo-coding data management system depends on user's recognition on the layout of the interfacing-features such as icons, diagrams and so on which are chosen by map designers. Hence, the proper design of a GIS illustrate constitutes the core issue to be dealt with. With the development of information technology, the conceptual model of mapping changes rapidly. The emergence of digital map is revolutionizing the traditional perception on the conceptual model. Based on recent advances in cartography and visualization, this paper reconsiders the issue of how to devise a personalized interface design procedure, the empirical strategy is to elaborate the principles of design psychology, man-computer interaction and planar design, and to suggest a scientific procedure for establishing the GIS interface.Based on the mentioned above, this paper presents a model design of interface and digital map for the Shanghai commercial networks planning and management GIS. The project began with a detailed study on the interface layout, the setting of map layers and colors of the system, then followed the visualization principle of interface design, it has developed a whole system design including a graded-map display system. Finally, in the Shanghai Commercial Networks Planning and Management of GIS, the commercial points are the main elements to present, so the interface features have been designed in a compatible way with the spatial management of those points. This work is due to the flaws identified in the "Comprehensive Collection of the City Commercial Network Planning," which suggests a set of graphic symbols of commercial network, but the symbols prepared are an abstracted primitive set that is a combination of a series of regular graphics and lacks systematic sense. To make correction, this paper, based on the commercial network subject classification system provided by the Shanghai Commercial Network Office, has designed a thematic symbol library for the commercial network in order to coordinate the visualization of the network features in the Shanghai Commercial Networks Planning and Management of GIS.
