With the development of the Internet and Intranet technology, on-line exam is replacing the traditional exam which depends on paper and pens in many aspects. So it is very meaningful to study the exam based on computer network. Many existing on-line exam systems have some disadvantages. For example, they cannot create adaptive examination papers that are fit for every student respectively, they cannot evaluate the student's learning status roundly and the speed of data transmission is very slow when the flow of information in network is very high, etc.In order to solve these problems, a novel architecture of an adaptive on-line exam system is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the mobile agent technology is used in this system architecture to mitigate the burden of server and the flow of information in network. The tasks in different phrases of an exam procedure are assigned to several agents. These agents can collaborate with each other during the exam period, which arranges the testing procedure in an orderly way. Secondly, we propose a new kind of student model called SM and two novel algorithms based on SM to create adaptive examination papers and provide objective assessments for students. We have implemented these algorithms and have got good effects.Because there are a little work that have been done on adaptive on-line exam systems, the architecture and algorithms proposed in this dissertation are very meaningful and of great value.
