As an emerging communication technology, ultra-wide bandwidth (UWB) is drawing more and more attention for its merits such as large relative bandwidth, low multipath interference, high capacity, good penetrability, high resolving power, good concealment and so on. Moreover, compared with the existing wireless communications such as Bluetooth, IEEE 802.11b and IEEE 802.15, UWB can provide higher transmission rate. Promoted by the military requirement and business market, UWB technology is evolving to maturity. In the UWB wireless communication system, time-hopping technique plays a key role. According to the requirement of communication systems, time-hopping sequences must have good correlation performance, that is, good auto-correlation and cross-correlation properties. The correlation performances of cubic time-hopping sequence, cubic + linear time-hopping sequence and generalized cubic time-hopping sequence are analyzed in this thesis respectively. Moreover, the properties of these three time-hopping sequences are compared, based on which, the conclusion that the generalized cubic time-hopping sequence performs the best is drawn. At the same time, based on the three cubic time-hoping sequences, two different modulation schemes, the time-hopping pulse position modulation (TH-PPM) scheme and the time-hopping binary phase shift keying (TH-BPSK) scheme are simulated with MATLAB to analyze and compare the performances of the time-hopping UWB systems employing these three cubic time-hopping sequences. The obtained simulation results show that for the same modulation scheme, the generalized cubic time hopping sequence performs the best whilecubit time hopping sequence exhibits the worse performance. On the other hand, it is shown that the system employing TH-BPSK scheme performs better than that employing TH-PPM scheme.
