Fingerprint has become the most reliable research object of the biology identification technique for it's sole and unchangeable. Because fingerprint identification technique has good implement and practicality, it has become one of the most prevalent, convenient and reliable identity authentication techniques. So the development of automatic fingerprint identification system has become the insistent need of the modem information safety. The pretreatment of fingerprint is the key content of fingerprint identification and it is also the key technology of fingerprint identification system.This paper presents a complete Gabor filter based fingerprint image preprocessing method according to the characteristic of the fingerprint image. It lays a good foundation for minutia points extracting and fingerprint matching. The paper contents these main points. The first, Theoretical fundament and practical demand for Gabor filter;The second, in the minutiae-based fingerprint system, we designed the Gabor filter whose parameters was selected. The third, the structure-based fingerprint system are proposed, in this system we also designed the Gabor filter. The fourth, we compare the structure-based FP representation and the minutiae-based FP representation, which makes use of limited information in FP images. The fifth ,we supply the all experiments.The main conclusion, the shortage and the prospect of the research of this thesis are given finally.The algorithm brought forward in this paper has been realized and tested. The software environment is Windows XP and matlab6.5. All of the experiments are tested on standard FP database FVC2004.The test result shows the new algorithm has improved the result of the image processing The algorithm of this paper is valuable in both theory and practice.
